Spotlight On...
Co-Occurring Disorders
Services Many of our clients
are “dually-diagnosed,”
meaning in addition to
their psychiatric
diagnosis, they have
issues relating to drugs
and alcohol. At all of
our programs, we conduct
co-occurring disorder
groups where clients
come together to work
through their drug and
alcohol challenges
together. Run by
drug and
alcohol specialists, our
groups have realized
positive outcomes for
many of the clients who
participate in the
weekly groups.
El Hogar Community Services, Inc. is an
excellent place
for me to go to
groups and do
things to get me
out of myself.
The group
supervisors are
very sensitive to
our issues, and
make the groups
worth doing
because they help
to put perspective
on what we are
doing and they
show us how to
cope in life. The
receptionist is
always happy to
help and makes me
feel comfortable
while waiting. My
doctor helps me
understand why I
need medications
and discusses
possible side
effects. Everyone
else has a smile
even though you
may not know
them. El Hogar Community Services, Inc. is
always ready to
help you with what
you need.

I have been with
El Hogar Community Services, Inc. for about
two years now and
I’ve learned a
lot. Since I was
13 I have never
been off probation
or parole. I have
always had someone
looking over my
shoulder and felt
I needed to have
them there to make
sure I didn’t
fall. With El
Hogar I learned I
need things in my
life for me,
instead of someone
telling me I did.
Over the past two
years I have
learned things
about me. I
learned to talk to
people and feel
more comfortable
with myself and
people in
general. I have
learned to make
decisions without
having to worry
about the
outcome. I feel
sure about what I
want to do with
life and how I
want to live it. -

What I like about
El Hogar Community Services, Inc. is the
variety of the
groups and
counseling that I
can choose from.
I attend DBT group
on Tuesday, DRA
group Tuesday and
Thursday, Peer
Support Volunteer
Network on
Wednesday, and
Self Esteem group
on Friday
morning. All of
the groups have
helped me
tremendously in
several areas of
my life and in
interactions with
the general
public. - JS |

Six years ago I
came into El Hogar Community Services, Inc.
in very bad
condition. I had a
severe bipolar
manic breakdown
and a minor stroke
affecting my
mind. I signed up
for a lot of
classes which
slowly helped me
in my recovery.
My service
coordinator and a
few group
facilitators have
really helped put
my life back
together. I
started out with a
lot of small
goals, then
started to
remember who I
used to be. I
started setting
higher goals. I
had a lot of
stumbling blocks
and El Hogar Community Services, Inc. staff
helped me make
wise choices. Now
that my life is so
much better, I
feel I should be
here to support
our newcomers. I
still attend
classes and I
still receive
counseling. I
have my service
coordinator and
groups
facilitators to
keep me level with
reality. I’m so
grateful that we
have this program
available for all
of us. - TL |

The Anger Control
Group has brought
balance to my
life. By bringing
things out in
group, I can get
the perspective of
the other members,
and learn not to
over think
things. I share
things I’ve been
through and can
help others work
their way through
their troubles
within. I feel
comfortable
expressing things
that are bottled
up inside of me
without any
judgments or being
thought less of.
The Bipolar group
has a family
atmosphere. It’s
a large group that
cares about one
another. And
people like the
SacPORT group
because they like
the food. The
group leaders do a
great job! - WRD |
